ALTHOUGH at the most only some few hundred feet
wide, you may know of it as a separate, complete continent—a fabled land, unveiled by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo and Sir Francis Drake, and storied in more recent times by tawdry full-color magazine ads, noxious Gidget movies, overamped Beach Boy schmaltz. Surviving that, and minus the unicorn, it's still fable enough, to those who go there at all hours and in all seasons.
