Sudanese Civil Sonnet

Terese Svoboda

The bones scatter not as impressively
as the elephants', unless you call it
a decorator's statement, massed thousands
for color and texture. Lots of texture
here, especially where the bones complicate
with smaller sets. Still, Matthew Brady would
have rearranged them, put in rifles for effect.

The CNN staff doesn't bother. They
whirr overhead where it's cooler, uncowed
by the close cruising Hueys. This war's cheap,
it uses no bullets, eating's the only
political statement. Why, these bones
could be theirs, so white, so strong, so recent.
