Ashley Gilbertson

Ashley Gilbertson began his career at the age of thirteen taking photos of skateboarders and graffiti artists in his native Australia. He began working internationally in the late 1990s studying displaced people and civil unrest throughout Asia. After photographing returning Albanians in Kosovo, Gilbertson has focused on conflict and displacement in countries such as Afghanistan, Iran, and, since 2002, Iraq, largely on contract for the New York Times. His many honors include the 2004 Robert Capa Gold Medal, the Photographer of the Year from the National Photo Awards, and selection for Time magazine’s “Pictures of the Year.” His forthcoming book Whiskey Tango Foxtrot: A Photographer’s Chronicle of the Iraq War will be published by the University of Chicago Press in fall 2007. He is represented by Aurora Photos and his work can be seen at his website.
