Thanks, Andy -- the inflation calculator tells me that $25 in 1934 would be about $400 today. That's about 15 cents a word in today's money -- for Evelyn Waugh!

Josh - VQR paid Waugh its standard 1934 rate for "The Rough Life": $5 per printed page. That comes to $25-30, depending on the final layout. I don't think VQR was in the habit of commissioning essays from writers in the 1920's & 30's - I've yet to find an essay from the first ten years of the magazine that was written on advance. I suspect that writing on advance is a rather modern development in VQR's history. So travel writers like Waugh would have to fund their expeditions themselves, without any guarantee of return on their investment.

My understanding of the record-keeping here at UVA is that our financial records are kept in a wholly separate place than our editorial records (both of which are part of the library's great big archival system), so I'd be surprised if this came up over the course of the research for this piece. I'll ask around the office here, though, and if we get a number I'll follow up here and e-mail you with it.

This may be too much to ask, but is there a record of how much he was paid for the piece by VQR? It would be an interesting comparison point to contemporary travel writing.
