In April 1927, the acclaimed poet and Abraham Lincoln biographer Carl Sandburg visited the University of Virginia and met with VQR editor James Southall Wilson. In support of the two-year-old journal, Sandburg later submitted seven poems, which were published in the summer and fall 1928 issues. That October, Sandburg commended Wilson for the “proud strength” and “Jeffersonian simplicity” of the magazine’s typography. His correspondence and poetry are in the VQR archives in the Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library at the University of Virginia.
