Benita Mayo

Benita Mayo is a photographer whose work has been featured in outlets such as the Library of Congress, C-Ville Weekly, and Charlottesville Tomorrow.  Her work has been exhibited at venues such as the McGuffey Art Center, Second Street Gallery, Artspace Herndon, and others. She is a 2021 UVA Equity Center Fellow-in-Residence and 2021 Residency Artist at the McGuffey Art Center.

In 2018, after learning about the dangers that Serena Williams and Beyoncé Knowles faced during childbirth because of improper care, I became curious about pregnancy risks that Black women face in the US. Their stories might be well-known, but those of women who lack access, agency, or resources too often go untold.
