Song for Middle Age

ISSUE:  Autumn 1958

Hoarding your sun at midday,
Husbanding heart’s blood,
Stay away from the country
Where lions fight for food.

Studying mean and measure
Against a fall or leap,
Look to the left-hand danger
Along the edge of sleep,

And come away from the country
Where sheep have eaten the woods
And green fields at noonday
Harbor no gods.
