James Conrad McKinley is a native of South Carolina. After a decade in southern California, where he pursued a career as a singer-songwriter, he came back east and earned graduate degrees in creative writing from Hollins University and the University of Virginia, where he was a Hoyns Fellow. He is currently a law student at U.Va. He formerly taught at Longwood University in Farmville, Va.
