Son’s Blessing

ISSUE:  Summer 2005

My father’s father rises from his grave
and moves within the night until he stands

before his only child. The dead are not
received alone, and in my father’s gaze,

his vision marks the longing of all sons.
My father’s father turns his hat in hand

and does not know for what to ask or why.
To guide his father back among the dead,

my father makes a blessing of his loss
and speaks where I must one day speak for him.
