Liesl Schillinger is a New York-based critic, columnist, moderator, and translator. Her articles and essays have appeared in the New York Times, the New Yorker, the New Republic, the Washington Post, the Daily Beast, and Matter. She is the author of the book of neologisms Wordbirds (Simon and Schuster, 2013), and the translator of The Lady of the Camellias (Penguin Classics, 2013) and Every Day, Every Hour (Viking, 2012).

It may sound incomprehensible—senseless, Constance Garnett would have put it, as she did in her translation of The Brothers Karamazov—but while the rest of the world may dread the return of the prolonged hostile stare-down known in the last half of the last century as the Cold War, in some ways, I welcome the refreeze.
