In the Spring 1955 issue of the Virginia Quarterly Review, Eudora Welty published the essay “How I Write.” It was later revised and retitled as “Writing and Analyzing a Story” for inclusion in her collection The Eye of the Story: Selected Essays and Reviews (1978). On the manuscript page excerpted above, Welty discusses her creative process during the writing of the short story “No Place for You, My Love.” The piece is a window into the mind of one of the most decorated American short story writers of her generation. Welty won the 1973 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, the National Book Critics Award, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, among many other honors.
