Gothataone Moeng

Gothataone Moeng is a former fiction fellow in the Wallace Stegner Fellowship at Stanford University. Her writing has also received fellowships and support from Tin House, where she was a 2019 Summer Workshop scholar, and from A Public Space, where she was a 2016 Emerging Writer Fellow. Her writing has appeared in American Short Fiction, One Story, A Public Space, and the Oxford American. She holds an MFA in creative writing (fiction) from the University of Mississippi. She currently lives in Serowe, Botswana.

The three women in the kitchen of the large Phakalane home did not look much alike, but they were sisters. Their unlikeness extended to their demeanors—the bearing in their shoulders, the timbre of their laughter, how they looked at one another. They had gathered on a Sunday, a day replete with sun and the bright heat of a Gaborone summer.
