Rachel Greenwald Smith is the author of Affect and American Literature in the Age of Neoliberalism (Cambridge, 2015). “State of Scarcity” is drawn from her forthcoming book, On Compromise: Art, Politics, and the Fate of an American Ideal (Graywolf, 2021). She is an associate professor of English at Saint Louis University.
